This is the question that every leader wants to know — and the one that causes us the most anxiety. Fortunately, there are some simple rules that can help you out:

  1. Measurement isn’t analysis. Your goal is to answer one question: Did it work? Analysis happens later.


Data doesn’t tell you if anyone will buy your product.

Amazon and Google are the inequitable kings of data.

They know more about us than anyone and use that knowledge to sell us products and pummel us with ads. Wikipedia defines analytics as “the discovery, interpretation, and communication of meaningful patterns in data.” This phrase does a good job of capturing the essence of what analytics pros and data scientists do on a daily basis. Most dashboards are useless, let’s fix that.

1) Dashboards should be simple.

I’ve been asked to create dashboards for several companies over my career. To my surprise, a marketing team at one of the biggest technology corporations in the world asked my team to develop dashboards for them. I assumed that big tech companies had all these things figured out.
